30% Aligner Efficacy Rule for Deep Bite Can Be Improved:
Although the scientific literature has shown in aligner treatment of complex vertical dimension conditions such as deep bite, that aligners are only only 30% effective (Shahabuddin, King, Jeon et al AJO/DO 2023), Dr. Voudouris has found it can indeed be improved significantly.
Interestingly, the ability of aligners to intrude the lower incisors in deep overbite treatment has also been shown to be only 1/3 effective (Haouili, Kravitz et al, AJO/DO 2020), questioning aligner applications for good outcomes compared to brackets (Papageorgiou et al AJO/DO 2020). Dr. Voudouris has shown clinically, incisor intrusion with aligners additionally can be improved significantly to correct deep overbite in conjunction with the supercorrection leveling of the curve of Spee.
There was thereby an indication from the scientific evidence-based data that a novel AIA be developed and applied to directly target lower incisor intrusion in order to enhance the efficacy and performance of aligners. AIAs have become today part of the Supercorrection Prescription for complete deep bite correction with aligners. (This is similar to how chewables are used to seat aligners to prevent tracking or seating issues)
